Monmouth County offers a wealth of waterfront properties, particularly in the communities found on the Rumson peninsula. Surrounded by water on three sides, this area features spectacular river views and plenty of opportunities for water fun and adventure.
The peninsula is bounded by the Navesink River and the Shrewsbury River. These waterways help define the lifestyles in the boroughs of Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver, and Red Bank, as well as in other communities around the peninsula.
The most highly valued and the most beautiful homes in the area are found along the banks of these rivers. Homeowners enjoy the many perks that come with waterfront living, including gorgeous, relaxing views and opportunities for an active lifestyle.
The Navesink River
The communities around the Navesink River include the boroughs of Rumson, Fair Haven and Red Bank. The river’s official name is North Shrewsbury River, but it’s more popularly known as the Navesink after the Navesink Native Americans of the Lenni Lenape tribe who populated the area before the European settlers.
The Navesink River is a major recreational destination. It’s a sports fisher’s delight for its rich catch of striped bass, summer flounder, bluefish, and crabs. Other activities on the river are power boating, kayaking, sailing, canoeing, and swimming. In winter, the frozen river makes a good spot for ice skating.
The Navesink is home to several private and community clubs, including yacht, rowing, and sailing clubs. Along the banks are hotels, apartments, restaurants, parks, and many of the most beautiful homes in the area.
The Shrewsbury River
The Shrewsbury River is surrounded by several communities, including Rumson and Little Silver, both found on the Rumson peninsula. The river is approximately 8 miles long and joins the Navesink River just north of Highland Bridge.
Just like the Navesink, the Shrewsbury River is a popular destination for water sports. Recreational fishing is popular here, with the river teeming with such species as striped bass, bluefish, and fluke.
Boating and sailing are also among the many activities you can do on the Shrewsbury. Several marinas featuring boat and fishing docks are found here. Other activities include kayaking, paddling, and bird watching.
Community and recreational clubs based on the Shrewsbury include the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club and the Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club. The river is also the site of various festivals and fairs.
Waterfront properties
Properties along the Navesink and Shrewsbury are mostly grand estates and sprawling single-family homes with spectacular views of the water. Quite a few come with private river access and private docks. A number of these homes were built in the Victorian and Edwardian eras when the area served as a holiday destination for wealthy New Yorkers.
Sitting on large lots, these homes come with the finest features and amenities you would expect to find in a luxury property.
While single-family homes and estates make up the bulk of waterfront properties in the area, there are also a number of luxury condos and townhomes. They come with large living spaces and features that guarantee comfort and convenience, but at more affordable prices than their single-family counterparts.
